Fact - Over 1 billion users are on Facebook. InstaGram say it has 300 million users per day. Twitter recently surpassed 500 million accounts. And SME owners want to know if they should take advantage of these trends. Some are trying, but few are reaping any rewards.

The temptation is to use social media networks to increase sales by promoting their products. But if you start thinking like a client would, you'll soon understand that the secret to social media is being human - simply be likeable.

We have assembled some tips for SME owners, that could ensure greater success using social media networks.

Social Media - Creates Brand Awareness

Do some homework. Try searching Twitter for tweets about your business. Example, if you are a lawyer search for tweets "need a lawyer" in your area. You'll be surprised how many people are already looking for you. These are potential customers. So let them know that you are there to help.

Social Media - Likes and Follows

Don't tell your customers to like you or follow you, instead tell them why they should. Give your customers a reason to connect with you on the social media stage. Use social media to answer their questions.

Social Media - Engage

Wondering why nobody's responding to your posts? It's probably because you're not asking any questions. Social media is about engagement and having a conversation. So ask for their opinion or ask them questions. This usually starts the conversation.

Social Media - Share

The biggest reason why Facebook has gone from 0 to a billion users is photos. Pictures and videos tell stories about your SME in ways that text alone cannot. You don't need a production budget, either. Use your smartphone to take pictures and short videos of customers, staff, and cool things at your business, and then upload them directly to Facebook and Twitter. A picture really is worth a thousand words, and a video is worth a thousand pictures.

Social Media - Monitoring Tools

Listen, Respond, Learn - Like everything else you will need the right tools to get the job done. Most companies cannot afford the cost of high end social media monitoring tools, so do it manually. You will need to spend some time on the various Social Media Networks, at least 45 - 60 minutes a day. There's a lot to learn. Spend real time each day reading and searching, listening and responding, and joining the conversations. This is usually where everything breaks down simply because SME owners don't have that time to allocate to Social Media and giving the task to employees, can be a total waste of time. So what should you do?
