If only it were that simple. Then we'd all be millionaires right? Hold on a minute, that is exactly what happened. The internet boomed and then subsequently went bust. Then it came back. The new buzz words were Search Engine Optimization, Internet Marketing, Page Ranking, Social Media Optimization, Search Engine Marketing, and Web Positioning. What does it all mean? The translation is, bringing visitors to your website. But how? Do I have to advertise? How will people find me?
The Power of Search Engines
The answer is really simple, you need to be found. When a user wants information on a product or service he goes online, surfs over to a search site, and enters his query. His page then changes and a list of possible sites appears. This is the search engine's results page (SERPs). At first glance the selection may be overwelming. A recent report showed an average in the hundreds of thousands of entries for any given search query. Internet users are always in a hurry so they will seldom surf past the third page or first thirty results. So that's where you need to be if you want to be found.
Fact:
Three search engines control over 95% of the searching power. As of April 2012 the 3 were Google (66.4%), MSN/Bing (15.3%) Yahoo (13.7%). That's where you need to be seen. So you do some research and find out you can submit your site to them directly for indexing, and its free! How long will you have to wait before it appears in the search engine's results? The truth is, that it could be several months. If you do nothing at all, it could be years. And even if it takes months where in the results will your website appear. You need to be upfront within the top 30 and quickly.

Ok so we are going to offer you some free information. Before you do anything surf over to W3C Markup Validation Service. Here is a free service that will validate your pages coding. Error free coding is the first step. Search Engines' Robots, Spiders, or Crawlers (these are pieces of software that will visit your site eventually) don't like bad code. If they can't read your website you won't get indexed. Next fix the bad code. Not all coding errors are fixable but at least fix the ones you can. The most common errors are missing "alt and title" tags, as it happens these are also important for SEO.

Go back and read your pages, really read them carefully. Count the words. Those three major search engines, they like content, fresh, unique, informative, content. You will need anywhere from 450-1000 words per page. Rewrite the whole thing if you have to. Make your content interesting and get to the point fast. It is a little like writing an essay. And it is more like point and fact. Take your time and write good content.

Make sure all your pages link up. You do not want to have any pages that go nowhere. You do not want to click on a link and the page cannot be found. Your linking structure is really important.

Before launching your website, it's a great idea to write serveral articles on your expertise. Write them with authority. Make them strong and to the point. Use words like New, Secret, Insider Info, Great Savings, etc. Have several articles ready to go. Optimize them for a product or service you are selling or suppling. Focus on one item per article. Don't try to sell it, just explain it properly. Explain why buying it from you is better than buying it from anyone else. Now you are almost ready.
