What are Meta-Tags & Alt-Tags? Are they important?
You are asking this question because you are a little familiar with HTML, the internet’s core language. Meta-Tags are tags that describe certain things about your web page to the internet. Most are never seen by the user and are placed between the Title and the Head tags on your HTML page. There are many meta tags. Once upon a time they had significant value especially to Search Engines. But that is not so true today. Many Search Engines today often skip meta tags but still some tags are given a quick look. The meta tag Description is looked at and so is the meta tag Keywords, but their contents have to be brief and laid out correctly to have any value. Correct meta tag layout and structure always is a good thing but most websites out there use them incorrectly and therefore have caused Search Engines to overlook them.
Alt Tags are used to describe, using words, images. In the old days not all monitors could display graphics correctly if at all, so the alt tag was used to give the user an idea at what he would looking at if a picture did appear. Today all monitors are capable of displaying graphics so the need for the alt tag has diminished. But, and it is a big but, today with cyber attacks capable of disguising themselves as graphics and loading themselves just as a picture could load itself onto your screen many users opt to turn off the displaying pictures option in their web browser. So the need for alt tags has resurfaced.
So are these two things important to web positioning? Again the answer is yes but both sets of tags need to be used correctly. Your average web designer would have no idea how to use them much less use them correctly. Usually these guys abuse the tags which unfortunately get the site banned by the Search Engines and therefore never appearing in queries.
